White River Outing
Oct 07, 2010

When: October 7th-10th, 2010

Where: White River, Mountain Home, Arkansas

Coordinator: Bernie & Carla Rauen, 502-228-5735

# of spots: 12

Outing Details:
The White River and the North Fork of the river offer excellent fishing with over 40 access areas, many of which offer ample parking, port-a-pottie, and picnic tables. When conditions are right, most of the water is wadeable. With so many access points, it's easy to change locations to accommodate the generation schedule. For those that wish to float or use a guide service, there are two well equipped fly shops in the area that provide guides and also a number of guide services on-line.

I strongly suggest carrying a map as most of Arkansas consists of two-lane back roads. Also, we may, depending on water and weather conditions, try to fish other waters and have to take other, unknown, back roads.

Rooms will be reserved by the Coordinator once the number of participants have been determined. The motel including all applicable taxes is about $90/day.So the trip including gas, food, license, and lodging is about $560/person. If you carpool and share a room the cost is between $300-$350 or less.

Travel time is between 8 and 10 hrs. depending on traffic. Most made it in about 8 hrs. last year. There are several routes and they all take about the same amount of time. I'll share those options at a later date.

License:
Non-resident with trout stamp can be purchased on-line or at the local Wal-Mart in Mountain Home. Cost is between $23-$29 depending on the number of days. Do not purchase a license until the trip has been confirmed which will be a few days prior to departure. High water and/or weather conditions may force cancellation.

Equipment:
This is my personal preference, but suggest 5 – 6 wt rod with 5X – 6X tippet. The fish can be spooky so the lighter the tippet the better. Bring both floating and sinking or sinking tip line. You have to get the wet flies down so if they are not weighted be sure to bring some lead shot in various sizes/weights. Suggest barbless hooks or crush the barb. Chest waders are a must; hip waders will severely limit your access. Also, a PFD is recommended. The water fluctuates and can rise quickly so be cognizant of the water level at all times and move to shallow water promptly when the water starts to rise.
