Making the First Cast Count

“Making the First Cast Count”, fly casting clinics are presented by Robert DeAngelis and other instructors from Derby City Fly Fishers. Each clinic will begin with some casting fundamentals and process at the students’ pace. Robert encourages a free flow of ideas to make these clinics as valuable as possible. The casting clinics will be divided into three individual courses consisting of two classes each. Each class will be held at Cherokee Pond in Louisville, KY.

Each class will feature demonstrations, one-on-one instruction, practice drills, and question/answer dialog. It is our commitment you walk away from the classes as a proficient caster ready to make that first cast count. For more information on each clinic, please contact Robert DeAngelis at robert@derbycityflyfishers.com.

Fundamentals of Fly Casting

March 16th and March 30th 2:30pm - 4:30pm

In this two session clinic students will review the basic grips stances, hand/arm/wrist/shoulder movements for the basic and roll casts.  Each session will build on material covered in prior clinic.  The goal of the clinic is a repeatable 30 foot roll cast and 30 foot basic cast including pick up and put down. With time permitting, the clinic will also cover the false cast, shooting line, and performing a reach cast.

Accuracy and Distance for light tackle

June 1st and June 8th 4:30pm - 6:30pm

This clinic is for casters who have repeatable 30 foot basic casts. This clinic will review and introduce ways to be more accurate at 30 feet, and address accuracy issues when casting beyond 30 feet. We will then cover some presentation elements with accuracy including the reach cast, aerial mends, and curves.  The goal of the clinic is to be able to pick up a fly and return it to the water with one or fewer false casts, in a changed direction, longer distance, with a presentation element.

Accuracy and Distance for heavy tackle

July 20th and August 3rd 6:30pm - 8:30pm

This clinic is for casters who have mastered the ability to pick up and put down at 30 to 40 feet while changing direction and distance. We will focus on achieving pure distance, and the elements of a cast required to make longer casts in challenging situations such as: wind, obstacles, heavy rods/reels, heavy or wind resistant flies, short time frames, moving targets, no weight out of tip, boat decks, etc.  The goal of this clinic is to progress in at least one area that improves your ability to make a 50 foot cast in a wide range of conditions. Distance methods covered will include extending stroke length, controlling line speed and loop size, using hauls, double hauls, and shooting line forwards and backwards.
